Announcement: Next Journal Club Round Now Open

A sincere thank you to those whose programs contributed to last quarter’s journal club competition. The winning program will be featured in the February 2013 issue of Neurosurgery, with the finalists appearing in the Neurosurgery Journal Club blog.

The selected article for the next Journal Club competition is listed below, and can be found online at http://www.neurosurgery-online.com. The deadline for submission is September 1st, 2012.

The Impact of Provider Volume on the Outcomes After Surgery for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis,” by Dasenbrock et al. Neurosurgery. (June 2012).

As a reminder, Journal Club submissions should adhere to the following guidelines for submission:

Requirements

Current neurosurgery residents and fellows may contribute to Journal Club commentaries. We particularly encourage submissions that reflect the participatory nature of the traditional journal club setting.

Authors of Journal Club submissions may not be from the same institution or have any real or apparent conflict of interest with the authors of the Journal Club article being reviewed. Journal Club articles are chosen from among the top-downloaded Neurosurgery articles of the previous calendar quarter.

Format

The format should follow that of Journal Club presentations in neuroscience departments. Comments must be accurate, well reasoned, and scholarly.

Journal Club commentaries should have 11 main components:

  • Significance/context and importance of the study
  • Originality of the work
  • Appropriateness of the study design or experimental approach
  • Adequacy of experimental techniques
  • Soundness of conclusions and interpretation
  • Relevance of discussion
  • Clarity of writing, strength and organization of the paper
  • Economy of words
  • Relevance, accuracy and completeness of bibliography
  • Number and quality of figures, tables and illustrations
  • Future/next steps the paper logically leads to.

Journal Club submissions should provide a thoughtful critical review of the elements in the article, rather than simply rehashing the paper, and should focus on the most important results.

Submissions are limited to 2000 words with no more than 5 references. Authors should follow the accepted style ofNeurosurgery, as defined by the Instructions for Authors.

Gone are the days I come to check the site for new updates. Nowadays either updates come to me (the user/consumer/reader) or I won’t really know they even exist.
